We welcome Ipswich to the DW Stadium on Saturday for a League 1 fixture, the two clubs have met seventeen times down the years with the Tractor Boys having slightly the better of those meetings.
Our first encounter came in the League Cup 2nd round back in the 1992/93 season, the first leg at Springfield Park saw third tier Latics hold their Premier League visitors to a 2:2 draw, goals from Alan Johnson and Gary Worthington sent the home supporters, in the crowd of 2,684, home happy.
The second leg at Portman Road saw us go down 4:0, Ipswich went on to the ¼ finals that season and finish 16th in the Premier League, Chris Kiwomya scoring a hat-trick as Ipswich eased passed the Latics.
Scoring goals in both legs of the tie for Ipswich was left back Gavin Johnson who joined the Latics three seasons later and went on to star in our title winning side of the 1996/97 campaign.
With no wins in our last eight meetings we have to go back to March 2014 when two goals from James McClean and a Leon Barnett effort gave us all the points in a 1-3 win at Portman Road.
More recently we have managed just 3 points from a possible 24 against the Tractor Boys.
The last time we won against Ipswich at the DW was back in September 2013, a
2:0 victory was highlighted by a wonder show from keeper Scott Carson, which
was sandwiched between a goals by Ryan Shotton and Nick Powell, Powell’s being
a typical Nick Powell goal.
