Any Previous? Latics v Oxford United

The two clubs have only met 12 times down the years, all of which have come in the third tier of English Football, Latics’ with six wins to Oxford’s five are just edging it, but things are pretty tight between the two clubs.

The 82/83 season was when we first crossed each other’s paths, meeting for the first time on the 18th of December 1982 at Springfield Park, a crowd of 4,008 braved a bitterly cold day, snow was covering the ground and the sun was shining.

A close game saw Jim Smith’s Oxford turn out 0:1 winners with Latics remaining in 13th spot in the table. It was our first ever season at this level, following promotion from Division 4 the previous season, we finished the campaign off in 18th spot.

Oxford completed the double over us that season, a 2:0 win down at the Manor Ground in April saw to that, the following campaign another 2:0 defeat and a goalless draw had us struggling not only to get any points from our meetings but also scoring against the U’s appeared to be a problem, though we did rectify that in some style.

Fast forward to 2017 as the Latics and Oxford met for the first time in over 16 years, a pre-Christmas delight saw us record our best ever away win in the Football League, an hat-trick by Will Grigg, a brace from Max Power and a goal apiece by Nick Powell and Gavin Massey, cementing our place at the top of League 1 on our way to being crowned Champions at the end of that particular season.

Oxford completed the double over us again last season, winning both games by a 2:1 score line.
