When the Latics face Plymouth Argyle at the DW Stadium tomorrow it will be the 21st meeting between the two clubs.
There are two games that stand out for me, both ended up with the Latics bagging 3 goals, the first of which was at Springfield Park on the 19th April 1986, a crowd of 9,485 turned up to watch a classic, with over 3,000 traveling fans making the journey from Devon.
Argyle were riding high in the Division 3 (League 1) and unbeaten in eleven games with nine wins and two draws, they had the excellent Tommy Tynan up front, aided and abetted by Kevin Hodges, of course we had a great attacking threat with David Lowe, Warren Aspinall and Paul Jewel.
The Latics were on top form and won the game 3:0 with goals from Paul Jewell (2) and David Lowe. Plymouth finished 2nd that season and were promoted to the 2nd tier, whilst Latics just missed out finishing 4th behind Derby County.
The second game was a lot more recent, in fact the last time the two clubs met, 20th Jan 2018, a League 1 fixture at Home Park. Plymouth took the lead on 27 minutes when Graham Carey slotted home a penalty, but that just inspired the Latics to step up a gear, goals from Will Grigg (29), Gavin Massey (45) and Dan Burn (69) gave us the three points and completed the double over the Pilgrims that season.
