Latics face Port Vale at the DW Stadium in the latest round of games in their EFL group, a victory tonight would see us progress through to the next stage.
Down the years we have met Vale 32 times in all competitions, the first occasion being a very memorable FA Cup 1st round tie in 1969, which went to two replays.
Latics were drawn at home and courtesy of a Billy Sutherland goal, made a very creditable 1-1 draw with the then Division 4 high flyers. Three days later it was down to Vale Park and goals from Fleming and an extra time leveler by Fielding saw the game finish 2-2.
A week later and the 2nd replay took place at Old Trafford, goalless on 90 minutes the game went into extra time as it was proving impossible to separate the two sides, a late goal for Vale though saw them progress through to round 2 and Latics’ hearts were broken for another season.
Including replays, the Latics played nine games in the FA cup that season!
One of the all time great Latics/Port Vale games came on 13 April 1979, our first season as a Football League club, trailing 0-3 at Springfield Park at half time, Ian McNeil’s men through caution to the wind in the second half and came out victorious in a 5-3 classic. Peter Houghton hat-trick.
