Meet The Ref - Charlton Athletic v Wigan Athletic

Name: Gavin Ward

Born: November 1978

Place of Birth: Surrey

Gavin Ward has experience in the EFL, as well as the Premier League and in International football.

Ward was appointed to the Select Group 2 list of referees ahead of the 2018/19 season following more than ten years as an EFL referee in League One and League Two.

Having made his debut in August 2007 when Hereford United beat Barnet 2-1 at Underhill, he went on to take charge of the 2017/18 EFL Trophy Final between Shrewsbury Town and Lincoln City, as well as being the Fourth Official for the FA Vase Final in 2011.

So far this season, 24 of his 30 games have been in the Championship, including our goalless draw away at Blackburn back in December, the 0-0 encounter with Luton at the DW in March and our 2-2 draw at Hull back in September when Joffy Gelhardt scored a cracker.

Ward hasn’t been in charge of a Charlton game this campaign.

Latics’ related facts:

Gavin has ref’d the Latics against Norwich at Carrow Road twice, both games finished 1-0, a win apiece.

In the home game against Derby County in December 2018, Ward sent Kal Naismith off after 15 minutes for a professional foul on the diving little shit Harry Wilson.
