Championship
football resumes this Saturday for the Latics, following the Covid-19 pandemic
lockdown, with a trip to the John Smiths Stadium to face relegation rivals
Huddersfield Town.
The referee for the game is Australian official, Jarred Gillett
Currently
studying at Liverpool’s John Moores University, the 33 year old is ‘on loan’ to
the EFL from the Australian ‘A’ League where he has made a name for himself as
the country’s top official.
Gillett has
taken charge of both the Latics and Huddersfield on one occasion this season,
our 1-1 draw with Derby at the DW Stadium on Boxing Day and the Terriers 1-1
home draw against Swansea a month earlier on the 26th November.
Of Gillett’s
23 games so far this campaign, 18 have been in the Championship.
Interesting fact – In the Sheffield Wednesday v
Blackburn game in January, Gillett issued a somewhat harsh red card to fellow
Australian, Wednesday midfielder Massimo Luongo, in the 23rd minute
of the match, Blackburn went on to win 0-5 and the red card was later rescinded
on appeal.
