Meet The Ref - Latics v Luton Town

Latics and Luton are back at it on Saturday, this time it’s a Championship clash, the referee for the game will be Northamptonshire official, Andy Woolmer.

Andy Woolmer

The 56 year old has been a Football League referee since 2004, his first game being the League 2 goalless draw between Kidderminster Harriers and Notts County on the 10th August that year.

Previous Games

Andy Woolmer has previously refereed the Latics 14 times, two of those have come this season, our 2:1 defeat away at Hull and the 1:1 draw with West Brom at the DW Stadium, Josh Magennis picking up a booking in both games.

Woolmer is now a veteran of 623 games in which he has handed out a grand total of 1,802 yellow and, surprisingly, just 69 red cards over the 19 seasons that he has been active in league football.

Andy Woolmer was last in charge of a Luton Town game back in February 2022, a Championship encounter with Derby County at the Kenilworth Road, Luton running out 1:0 winners with Reece Burke and Cameron Jerome both picking up a yellow card.

Any FA Cup Previous? Latics v Luton

Latics and Luton have met twice previously in the FA Cup.

The first meeting came in December 2002, a 2nd round tie played at the then named JJB Stadium. Two Nathan Ellington goals and a sweet volley from substitute Michael Flynn saw the Latics through 3:0.

A young Emmerson Boyce played in the Luton side that day.

Latics: Filan; Eaden, Breckin, Jackson, Baines; Green (Mitchell 55), Dinning, Jarrett, Roberts (Flynn 81), Kennedy (Teale 55), Ellington

Unused Subs: Beasant, Brannan

Goals: Ellington (37 & 64), Flynn (86)

Ref: Howard Webb

Att: 4,544

Last Time Out

The last meeting was of course the 3rd round tie at Luton earlier this month, the game ended 1:1 but the Latics were desperately unlucky not to come away with the win having what looked a perfectly good goal disallowed in the final minute of the game.

Highlights - Luton 1:1 Latics

Luton FA Cup Form

The Hatters have been passed the 3rd round on just one occasion in the last ten seasons, though their FA Cup pedigree isn’t too bad, finalists back in 1959, losing to Nottingham Forest 2:1, Elton John’s uncle, Ron Dwight famously breaking his leg in that game, they also have three semi-finals under their belt, 1985, losing to Everton, 2:1. 1988, losing to Wimbledon, again 2:1 and in 1993, this time losing 2:0 to Chelsea.

Player To Watch – Carlton Morris
