Meet The Ref - Northampton Town v Wigan Athletic

We’re off to Sixfields on Tuesday to play fellow strugglers Northampton Town in a rearranged League One fixture, the man in the middle for the clash will be the same ref that postponed the original meeting a fortnight ago, Marc Edwards.

Marc Edwards

The 32 year old is in his second season as a National List official and has already ref’d us this campaign, our 4:3 home win over Accrington Stanley back in December.

Having served his apprenticeship in the National League, his first season in the ‘Big Time’ saw him issue just the one red card in 25 games, so far this campaign in 18 games, he hasn’t dished out any reds.

As mentioned above, this will be Edwards’ second Latics game, he has previously taken charge of one Northampton fixture, their 0:2 home defeat in last season’s League 2 playoff semi-final, first-leg against Cheltenham, who had Latics keeper, Owen Evans in goal, saving a penalty awarded by Edwards in the first half.

Edwards’ last game was a League 1 fixture between Shrewsbury & Crewe on Tuesday, 2 February, the game ended 0:1 to Crewe with five yellow cards handed out.

Currently, Marc is working for a Sunderland based Housing Association group as Head of Asset Management and Investment.

Any Previous? - Noprthampton Town v Latics

The Latics are at Sixfields on Tuesday to face fellow League 1 strugglers Northampton Town in a rearranged fixture, following the postponement of the game a fortnight ago due to a waterlogged pitch.

The two clubs have met 36 times down the years with the Latics having much the better of things, 18 wins to the Cobblers 6.

Up until our meeting at the DW back on Halloween, the previous seven had all gone the way of the Latics, with Northampton failing to score in any of those games.

We have an impressive record at Northampton, in 18 visits we have only lost three times. February 2001 was the last time we lost there, the Cobblers doing us 1:0 at Sixfields.

Last Time There

Back to New Years Day 2018 for the last time we went to Sixfields, a Nick Powell first half headed goal was enough on the day to get us the three points and keep us top of the table.

Latics Team - Walton; Byrne, Dunkley, Burn, James; Morsy, Evans, Jacobs, Massey (Power 70); Powell (Toney 71), Grigg (Perkins 85)

Unused Subs – Sarkic, Bruce, Roberts, Hunt

Any Previous? Latics v Wimbledon

For the purpose of this week’s ‘Any Previous’ article I am going to treat AFC Wimbledon and Wimbledon FC as the same club, in spirit they are, to the supporters they are.

Latics and Wimbledon have met 12 times down the years as Football League clubs, the Dons just edging us out with five wins to our four. The first meeting came in our first season as a Football League club, 9th September 1978, a 2:1 defeat at Plough Lane, the last was a 1:1 draw at the DW Stadium in April 2018, our final home game of the season.

The last two meetings both came in League 1 in the 2017/18 campaign, Latics winning comfortably at the Cherry Red Records Fans Stadium, by four goals to nil, Michael Jacobs opener, followed by a Nick Powell double and a last minute Ivan Toney effort. The return fixture at the DW Stadium saw Joe Piggott give the Dons the lead only for Jacobs to hit a second half leveller.
