Meet The Ref - Latics v Stevenage

Latics round off the 'three home games in a week' on Saturday when high flying Stevenage are in town for their first ever visit to Wigan, the referee for the game is scheduled to be Blackburn official, Ben Toner.

Following a last minute change of officials in our home game against Carlisle back in December, we once again try to tempt local(ish) lad Ben Toner down to the DW.

Previous Games

Ben Toner has refereed the Latics on five occasions previously, the last game was our away win at Crewe Alex in March 2022, a goal apiece from Josh Magennis and Will Keane giving the Latics a 0:2 win on o0ur way to lifting the League One title.

Toner’s last Stevenage games came in the 2021/22 season, there were two, an early season win in the EFL Trophy, 1:2 away at Oxford United and a 0:2 League Two defeat at home against Mansfield in March ‘22

The Latics go in search of a first double of the season with a trip to Sixfields on Saturday, we will face Northampton Town hoping to keep our run of good form at the home of Cobblers bobbing along, the referee scheduled for this game is Cumbria official, Anthony Backhouse.

Anthony Backhouse

The 30 year old has been a National List referee since the 2017/18 season, he was promoted to the Select Group 2 last summer and of his 13 games so far this campaign 6 have been in the Championship.

Previous Games

Backhouse has refereed the Latics five times previously, four of which came at the DW Stadium, his last Latics game though was an away day at the seaside against Blackpool earlier this season, we lost 2:1.

Anthony Backhouse has previously refereed a Latics v Northampton game, September 2017 at the DW Stadium, Latics winning 1:0 courtesy of a Michael Jacobs goal, Sammy Morsy – unsurprisingly – and Jacobs getting booked, whilst Dean Bowditch picked up a yellow for the Cobblers.
