Any Previous? Latics v Sunderland

Latics and Sunderland have met on 27 occasions down the years.

Our first meeting with the Mackems came in Division 3, in the 1987/88 season, a 4:1 defeat away at Roker Park in October 1987, that was followed by the infamous ‘mud slide’ game at Springfield Park in March ‘88 which ended 2:2.

Our first victory over Sunderland was our first ever Premier League win, 27 August 2005, a Jason Roberts penalty 2 minutes into the game enough to seal those historic 3 points.

We have lost the last four meetings with Sunderland, three of those coming last season and one earlier this campaign, back in October at the Stadium of Light, despite Charlie Wyke putting us a goal up our hosts came back strong in the 2nd half, winning the match 2:1.

Classic Encounter

The administration buster, a great performance from the lads to come back from a goal down and complete the double over Sunderland that season.

Latics: Jones; Darikwa, Tilt, Johnston, Robinson; Evans, Ojo, Lang, Solomon-Otabor (Whelan 82), Keane (Aagaard 87); Dodoo (Proctor 90)

Unused Subs: Evans, Clough, Gradner, Long

Goals: Latics - Keane (42) & Lang (58),  Sunderland – Wyke (32)

Highlights - Latics 2:1 Sunderland

Sunderland Current Form

Sunderland currently sit 9th in the Championship with 34pts from 24 games, their recent form, 2 defeats in their last 6 games, gaining.3 wins and a draw, beating Blackburn 2:1 on Boxing Day in their latest game, the last 6 results LWWLDW.

Sunderland’s 12 away games so far this season in the league have brought 18 points, 5 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats, scoring 17 goals and conceding 14.

In contrast the Latics home form at the moment is 12 games, 2 wins, 3 draws and 7 defeats, scoring 9 goals whilst also conceding 20.

Player To Watch – Ross Stewart

Ross Stewart

26 year old former striker, joined Sunderland in the 2020/21 season from Scottish Premiership club Ross County.

Stewart had an excellent season last time out, scoring 24 goals as Sunderland gained promotion to the Championship via the playoffs. This season, despite missing 11 games through injury, Stewart is bang in form, 7 goals and 3 assists from 9 games.

Tall and gangly, Stewart can appear awkward at times, but he has certainly been making life awkward for Championship defences this season.
