Due to the
current situation around the spread of the coronavirus the PWU studio at the
Beech Hill Book Cycle has been closed and we find ourselves ‘self isolating’.
Initially we
decided, especially with no football, to suspend the podcast until a decision
was made as to when the league action was back, but idle hands and all that, so
we took a group decision to make a series of specials over the coming weeks to keep
our Latics spirits high.
The first
one features Barry & Si, with special guests, Latics midfield player Gary Roberts
and Wigan singer-song writer Joe Astley.
Both
interviews are a great listen and can be found at 11 mins 45 secs and 38 mins
20, respectively.

What a turnaround since the start of
the New Year for the Latics, 12 games played, just 3 defeats, 6 wins and 3
draws.
21 points from a possible 36 is a
massive upsurge in form, especially considering the 12 previous to this run had
yielded just 6.
During a drab winter the Latics form
has put some sunshine the way of the supporters and given us realistic belief
that relegation can and will be avoided, though with us sitting just 2 points
outside the bottom three it is too close to call at this moment.
Having witnessed a much more positive
approach on the pitch and seen firsthand the togetherness of the squad I am quietly
confident that we will build on this form and finish the season comfortably.
There has been one massive negative,
the injury to defender Chey Dunkley away at Reading. A heart and soul player
who always gives his all for the club, plus a great character around the squad,
Dunks will be missed in the next few weeks.
The high was arguably the win away at
West Brom, though Leeds did run it a close second, the West Brom game was hot
on the heels of the Reading encounter with the player feeling down about Dunks,
the Baggies were bang in-form, top of the table and for Wolves fan Sam Morsy to
score the winning goal had the Latics skipper beaming from ear to ear.
Incredible scenes in the stand behind
the goal as the Latics support went wild in celebration, what a fantastic
display and result, the best of teh season so far.
What the next few weeks will bring with
the situation around the coronavirus is anyone’s guess, but when the season does
come to its climax we have seen since the turn of the year that we have enough
to be confident of staying in the league.
Latics
travel over the Pennines on Saturday to face Huddersfield Town in what is a
crunch game down in the basement area of the Championship.
Time for
another look back at previous encounters between the Latics and the Terriers
and some of the connections between the clubs.
Previous - We have played each other on 31
occasions, with a record of nine wins for the Latics, fourteen for Huddersfield
and eight draws.
The first
meeting between the two clubs was in November 1973 when the then non-league Latics traveled to Leeds Road for a 1st round FA cup tie, 3rd
Division Huddersfield ran out 2-0 winners that day, courtesy of two Bob Newton
goals, in front of 9,557 spectators.
Of course
that wasn’t the only time we met in the FA Cup, back in 2013 we beat
Huddersfield by four goals to one at the John Smiths Stadium in the 5th
round, we went on to win the cup that season, lovely.
