Meet The FA Cup Ref - Latics v Fulham

The Latics face Premier League opposition at the Brick Community Stadium on Saturday, Fulham are the visitors for a 4th round FA Cup tie, the referee for the game is scheduled to be County Durham based official, David Webb.

Webb made his debut in the EFL taking charge of the Bury v Brentford League Two match back in August 2008, whatever happened to those two clubs?

He is now in his 17th season as a professional ref.

So far in his career, David Webb has taken charge of over 550 games, quite an experienced referee, to say the least.

Previous Games

David Webb’s first Latics game came in the Championship, back in September 2013, a 2:0 defeat away at Leicester, both Jean Beausejour and Ben Watson ending up with yellow cards.

46 year old Webb has previously taken charge of 17 Latics games, of which we have won 8 and drawn 5, losing just 4, a lucky ref for us? We will see.

The last time David Webb was officiating in a Wigan Athletic fixture was also an FA Cup tie, our 1:1 away draw at Luton in the 3rd round back in 2023, a time when there were replays.

Twenty games so far for David Webb this season, eighteen of which have been in the Championship, one each in the FA and the EFL Cups

Meet The Ref - Latics v Lincoln

Latics are back at the Brick Community Stadium on Saturday, Lincoln City are in town for a League One encounter, the referee for the game will be Carlisle official, John Mulligan.

The 34 year old is in his first season as a National List official, with just three EFL games under his belt, it is fair to say that Mulligan is at the beginning of his refereeing journey.

Those three games have all come in League Two, his debut being Port Vale’s 3:1 home win over Fleetwood in October.

Previous Games

This will be the first time John Mulligan has officiated, in any capacity, in either a Latics or Lincoln game. Coming up through the ranks quickly, Mulligan was promoted to and took charge of 14 National League games last season.

His 13 games this season have comprised of, 6 in the National League, 3 League Two, 3 in the EFL Trophy and 1 FA Cup game.

Speaking about his first game in the EFL, John Mulligan commented:

I was quite emotional.

It’s a culmination of 16 years of dedication, sacrifice (both personal and professional) and ultimately hard work, all to purse the dream that every referee has when they first start, which is to referee in the Football League.”

Meet The Ref - Peterborough v Latics

The Latics are on the road on Tuesday, a trip down to London Road where Peterborough United will be our hosts for a League One encounter, the referee is scheduled to be Hastings official, Carl Brook.

The 49 year old is in his 5th season as a Football League ref, though he has been a referee for 30 seasons in the lower leagues of the football pyramid, he only made the graduation to the big time in the 2020/21 campaign.

Previous Games

Carl Brook has taken charge of six Latics’ games previously, three of those came in 2021 but they were spread over two seasons.

Away at Bristol Rovers in the admin season, Scott Wooton's last gasp winner, Burton at the DW on St Andrews Day 2021, Jonny Smith seeing red for a chest high challenge on Curtis Tilt and our 2nd round FA Cup win away at Colchester in early December.

Brook’s last two Latics game came earlier this campaign, away at Stockport back in October, James Carragher, Will Aimson and Scotty Smith all picking up yellow cards in a goalless draw. And the 0:2 home defeat to Orient in December, Cal Mac picking up a yellow.

Brook was at London Road back in August, that was the last time he was in charge of a game featuring Peterborough, it was a League One encounter against Wrexham and it ended 1:2 in favour of the visitors.
