Meet The Ref - Latics v Forest U21s

Latics are back at the Brick Community Stadium on Tuesday when Nottingham Forest Under 21s will be here for a Bristol Street Motors Trophy showdown, the referee for the game will be Birmingham official, Scott Tallis.

Tallis is in his second season as a National List official, he’s spent the previous three years plying his trade in the National League.

Previous Games

Scott Tallis has refereed the Latics twice previously, both last campaign the first of which came in the EFL Trophy on the 10th October 2023.

A group game against League One rivals Fleetwood, we drew 3:3 on the night, two goals down, Latics fought back through Stevie Humphrys and Josh Stones, then a wicked free-kick from Tom Pearce looked to have sewn up the match in our favour only for a last second equaliser for the Cod Men to spoil the party, but we took the bonus point courtesy of a 7:6 penalty shout-out win.

Meet The Ref - Latics v Wycombe Wanderers

Latics are back at the DW Stadium on Saturday when high flying Wycombe Wanderers are in town, the referee for the game will be Wakefield official, Bobby Madley.

It feels like he’s been around for years, but surprisingly, Bobby Madley is still only 39. Following a break from the game, he is making his way back to the top of his profession, he was back in the Premier League for a couple of games last season and of his ten so far this campaign, nine have come in the Championship.

Madley became one of the youngest ref’s to make it to the top, when in April 2013, aged just 27, he took charge of the Premier League game between Southampton and West Brom, this came less than two years after he made his debut in the Football League in the PNE v Notts County League One game in August 2011.

The 2013/14 season saw Bobby make it to the Select Group of referees and officiate in five top flight games, though he ended the campaign in the bottom tier with a League 2 encounter between Burton and Chesterfield.

At the end of the 2017/18 season, Madley was taken off the referees list following some personal issues, he subsequently returned in October 2020 and has made his way back up the ranks.

Previous Games

Madley has taken charge of ten Latics’ games previously, our first encounter was the first game of our FA Cup winning run, Bournemouth at the DW in January 2013 and the latest encounter was in April 2023, a 2:1 home win in the Championship over Millwall, James McClean picking up a yellow that day.

The latest Progress with Unity Podcast is now available.

The episode is hosted by Barry Worthington with co-hosts Charlie Keegan and Paul Thorp and focuses on the 1st round FA Cup tie away at Brunton Park against League Two side, Carlisle United.

The episode contains all the reaction to what eventually turned out to be a pulsating tie with a little controversy thrown in to the mix.

There is a discussion around the FA succumbing to pressure from the Premier League to scrap replays and go straight to extra-time and then penalties to settle the tie on the day.
