Meet The Ref - Derby County v Wigan Athletic

Following on from a great performance and very good result against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, the Latics travel down the M6/A50 on Wednesday to face Derby County in a Championship encounter looking for our first win on the road this campaign, the man inflicting his authority on the game will be the one, the only, Keith Stroud.

The 49 year old Bournemouth whistle blower has been in charge of nine games so far this season, six of which have been in the Championship, issuing just 20 yellows and no reds this is a quiet start to the new campaign by little Keith.

A frequent ref for the ‘tics, Stroud took charge of four of our games last season, Bristol City (2-2) and West Brom (1-0) away, Blackburn (3-1) and Stoke (0-0) at home.

A former top flight (briefly) ref, Stroud took charge of just one Premier League game featuring ourselves, the Reading v Latics game back in September 2007, which Reading won 2-1. He was originally promoted to the Select Group of officials in July 2007 following a career which had seen him progress from the Wessex League in 1988 to the Football League National List in 2004.

Keith Stroud lasted just two seasons amongst the elite of English refs, he was dropped back down to the National List and replaced with Kevin Friend.

Meet The Ref - Latics v Forest

Manchester referee Matt Donohue takes charge of the Latics’ home Championship fixture against Nottingham Forest this afternoon.

The former Denton PE Teacher was only appointed to the Select Group 2 of Referees this summer, and this will be his second Latics game, he was in charge of our trip to the smoke back in August when we lost to 3-1 to QPR down at Loftus Road.

Donners, as he is known to his mates, went full time after just one season at Football League level, he hasn’t officiated a Forest game yet, as previously mentioned he has just the one Latics match under his belt, that sunny afternoon in Shepherds Bush where he managed to issue four yellow cards to our lads, Kipre, Dunkley, Robinson and Garner.

Meet The Ref - Latics v Birmingham City

Tim Robinson

The Latics are back at the DW tomorrow (Tuesday) night for a Championship against Birmingham City.

West Sussex referee Tim Robinson will be in charge of the game, this will be only the 4th time the former PE teachers has reffed the Latics and it will be his second visit to the DW Stadium.

36 year old Tim was appointed to the EFL referees list for the start of the 2012/13 season, taking charge of his first game between Southend United and Accrington Stanley. He was the 4th Official at Wembley for the League 2 Play-Off Final between AFC Wimbledon and Plymouth Argyle in May 2016 and – as part of the PGMO development programme – Tim represented the PGMOL at the Dallas Cup 2012 and at the Nike Cup in China in 2012.



He is now part of the Select Group 2 full time refs and spends the majority of his time in the Championship.

Robinson’s three previous Latics were, a defeat, 1-0 at the Madjeski against Reading in April 2017, a 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth in 2018 and our 3-2 home victory on the opening day of last campaign against Sheffield Wednesday. A Latics connection: 2016/17 season, whilst refereeing the Charlton v Fleetwood game on the 4th February at the Valley he issued a straight red card to Nathan Byrne who was of course on loan down at the Addicks from us.

Meet The Ref - QPR v Latics - Matt Donohue

Manchester referee Matt Donohue takes charge of the Wigan Athletic away day at QPR on Saturday.

The former Denton PE Teacher was only appointed to the Select Group 2 of Referees this summer, going full time after just one season at Football League level.

Donners, as he is known to his mates, hasn’t officiated either QPR or the Latics previously, in fact his previous two games at Championship level both came this campaign, Hull’s 2-1 win over Reading at the KCom Stadium and Barnsley’s 2-2 home draw against Charlton last weekend.

In those two games he issued 11 yellow cards.
