Meet The Ref - Latics v Rotherham

Latics are back at the Brick Community Stadium on Easter Monday, Rotherham United are in town for a League One fixture, the referee for the game is scheduled to be Wolverhampton lad, Greg Rollason.

In his early 30s, Greg has been refereeing in the National League for the past two seasons.

In his first season on the National List, Rollason has just 7 (seven) EFL games under his belt, 2 in League One and 5 in League Two, his other games this season have come in the National League (13) and one EFL Trophy game.

Previous Games

That one EFL Trophy game was the Chesterfield v Latics encounter back in December and it was his first game between two league sides.

It didn’t turn out too well for the Latics that evening, going down 3:2 and out the Trophy, Cal McManaman and Joe Hugill scoring and Chris Sze and Scott Smith picking up yellow cards.

A former Geography teacher now teaching PE & Sport, Rollason is also the director of operations at the Whistle Foundation.

Meet The Ref - Shrewsbury Town v Latics

Latics are heading down the A49 on Good Friday to tackle Shrewsbury Town at the New Meadow, the referee for the game is scheduled to be Rochdale official, Tom Parsons.

The 32 year old was promoted to the National List for the start of the 2022/23 season, since then he has taken charge of 81 games, issued 373 yellow cards, 10 reds and awarded 17 penalties.

Previous Games

Tom Parsons has two Latics game under his belt, earlier this campaign he was in charge of the reverse fixture, two goals to the good with 20 minutes left, we contrived to hand a share of the spoils to the Shrews, a Will Aimson own goal and an 87th minute equaliser saw victory snatched away, Baba Adeeko, Matt Smith and Dale Taylor all ending up in Tom Parson’s book.

Boxing Day 2023 was the other occasion that Parson’s ref’d the Latics, our 0:1 home defeat to Derby County, four Latics players found their way into the book that day, Liam Morrison, Baba Adeeko again, Sean Clare and Callum Lang.

Parsons has refereed Shrewsbury thrice previously, that game with us back in December and twice at The Meadow, a 1:1 draw against Barnsley in February 2024, awarding the Tykes a 92 minute penalty to deny Salop taking all the points, and a 3:2 win over Port Vale in February 2023.

PWU Player Of The Season Nominations

The 2024/25 PWU Podcast Player of the Season voting is now open and will be conducted via a specifically created email address pwupots@gmail.com

So who is your choice as Wigan Athletic player of the season?

The academy as once again been extremely well represented in the Latics starting XI each week, with the usual number of graduates around 50% of those starting games. Outstanding performances on a regular basis from Tickle, Carragher, Adeeko, Robinson et al.

There have been some great performances from the older, more experienced lads too. Jason Kerr named captain at the start of the campaign and he has led the lads both on and off the pitch. Kerr provides that solid base to build on that every team needs, and he has been aided and abetted by his defensive partner Will Aimson, together they have been the mainstay of a defence that has conceded just 39 goals so far this campaign and kept 16 clean sheets.

Loan signing Dale Taylor has been a revelation, not only the leading scorer in the current squad but also the top assistor, Jonny Smith and Owen Dale, two players who get the fans up out of their seats, both have had some great games over the past few months.

Our man of the match polls throughout the season have seen 15 different players pick up the accolade voted for by you, the supporters, below is a list of the winners so far this campaign.

Thelo Aasgaard, Baba Adeeko, Will Aimson, Maleace Asamoah, James Carragher, Ronan Darcy, Ty Francois, Jason Kerr, K’Marni Miller, Jonny Smith, Matt Smith, Scott Smith, Dale Taylor, Sam Tickle and Jensen Weir

Latics are on the road again on Tuesday, down to St James’ Park for a League One encounter with Exeter City, the referee for the game will be Hertfordshire official, David Rock.

Rock is in his sixth season as a National List official, taking charge of his first game on August 10th 2019 at Vale Park, Port Vale and Northampton drawing 1:1 in a League Two encounter.

David Rock has refereed the Latics five times previously, two away days and three times at the DW Stadium, three of those games came in 2021, but spread across two separate seasons, the fourth was our 2:0 home win over Oxford in October 2023, booking Baba Adeeko, Liam Shaw and Callum Lang.

The last time Rock was in charge of a Latics game was February 2024, a 1:1 home draw against Cheltenham, Luke Chambers on the score sheet for the Latics and Cal McManaman finding his way into the referee's book.

Rock was last in charge of an Exeter game earlier this season, their 0:2 League One away win at Shrewsbury back in October.
