Meet The Ref - Latics v Charlton Athletic

Latics face Charlton Athletic at the DW Stadium on Tuesday evening , the referee for the game will be former Chippenham Town player, Wiltshire based official, Sam Allison.

Sam Allison

Sam is a fulltime firefighter; he has served his refereeing apprenticeship by progressing through the amateur leagues and into the National League, where he was officiating from the 2016/17 season up until the start of this one.

When the 39 year old took charge of the Exeter City v Forest Green Rovers EFL Trophy game on the 8th September 2020, he became the first black ref in the Football League since Uriah Rennie retired in 2009, 11 years previously.

Sam is obviously delighted about making the grade, he says: “I’m over the moon. I’m really, really excited and happy”

And on his refereeing style and ambitions: “I try to allow the game to breathe a bit”

“At the end of the day, if I can be seen as a good referee then that’s fantastic, but normally 50% of people are going to think you’re not great because they’ve been on the receiving end of getting beat”

“But I’ve got such a passion for the game and making sure I do the job to the best of my ability. If I can do that and nobody is talking about me at the end of the game, that’s what it’s all about.”

The game will be the first time that Sam Allison has refereed either the Latics or Charlton Athletic, of his 23 games so far this campaign 7 have been in League 1, 11 in League 2, 3 in the EFL Trophy and 2 FA Cup games.
