Any Previous? Swansea v Latics

Latics and Swansea have met 27 times down the years with the Swans having slightly the better of things with 12 wins to our 10.

Our first meeting came in the 1984/85 season, the 3rd November, a League Division 3 game, finishing all square, 2:2 at the Vetch Field, John Butler and Graham Barrow grabbing the Latics goals.

The return fixture at Springfield Park on the 30th April 1985 saw the Latics run out 2:0 winners, this time David Lowe and Gary Bennett getting themselves on the score sheet with 2,406 in attendance.

Our last meeting with Swansea came back in January 2020, a 2:1 defeat at the Liberty Stadium, Nathan Byrne giving the Latics the lead on 16 minutes only for Rhian Brewster and Andre Ayew to score for the Swans.

Classic Encounter

6th January 2001, at the then named JJB Stadium, Andy Liddell at the double on 28 and 72 minutes to secure the three points for the Latics, Roberto Martinez picking up a yellow card in the game.

That was the last time we beat Swansea in a league game.

Latics moved up to within a point of table toppers Millwall and 2 points clear of 3rd placed Walsall. Unfortunately we would come up short and finish 6th, losing in the playoffs to Reading, whilst Swansea finished the season in 23rd and were relegated to the bottom tier.

Player To Watch – Joel Piroe

Joel Piroe

23 year old Dutch forward, Joel Piroe is the focal point of Swansea’s attack.

Piroe joined the Swans in the summer of 2021 from PSV Eindhoven for a fee reportedly around the £1million mark.

His first season in the Championship brought 22 goals from his 45 appearances

A seemingly aggressive player, Piroe has already received 3 yellow cards and 1 red this season, he has also scored 4 goals from his 15 starts.
