Any Previous? Coventry v Latics

Latics and Coventry have met 8 times down the years with the Latics having slightly the better of things with 4 wins to Coventry’s 2.

Our first meeting came in the 1990/91 season, the 5th January ‘91, a 3rd round FA Cup tie, Division 3 Latics drawn away at top flight Coventry.

Highfield Road the venue for a game with a dramatic end, Darren Patterson’s stoppage time equaliser ruling out Micky Gynn’s opener, a 1-1 draw and a replay fixed for Wednesday the 9th January.

The replay at Springfield Park attracted the BBC Match of the Day cameras with the prospect of an upset on the cards.

The Latics set about the Coventry, Don Page missed a glorious chance but the game was settled by Micky Gynn scoring the only goal. A bumper crowd though for us with 7,429 spectators in attendance.

Our last meeting with Coventry was on the 9th April 2016, a 1:0 victory at the DW Stadium, Will Grigg getting the only goal of the game as the Latics marched on to winning the title.

Classic Encounter

23rd February 2005, top of the table Latics beating the Sky Blues at Highfield Road, Gary Teale giving the Latics the lead on 9 minutes only for Richard Beeby, the referee, to award a very dubious penalty on 22, Gary McSheffrey “dusting himself down” to put the spot kick past John Filan.

Nathan Ellington scored the winner on 68 minutes with a volley from outside the area.

Coventry City Current Form

Coventry currently sit 15th in the Championship with 23pts from 17 games, their recent form, 2 defeats in their last 12 games, 6 wins and 4 draws, the last 6 results WWDLWW.

Coventry City’s 7 home games so far this season in the league have brought 10 points, 3 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats, scoring 6 goals and conceding 6.

In contrast the Latics away form at the moment is 9 games, 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats, scoring 13 goals whilst conceding 11.

Player To Watch – Viktor Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres

24 year old Swedish forward, Viktor Gyokeres is the focal point of the Coventry attack.

Gyokeres joined the Sky Blues initially on loan in January 2021 from Brighton, making the move a permanent on in July 2021.

With 6 goals from 15 games, Gyokeres is the current top scorer in the Coventry ranks and he is highly rated and reportedly subject to interest from admiring clubs. A strong, quick forward, he is a real handful for defences in the Championship.
