Any Previous? - Sunderland v Latics

Latics have met Sunderland on 26 occasions previously, the majority of those games, 14, have come in the Premier League.

Our first meeting with the Mackems came in Division 3, in the 1987/88 season, a 4:1 defeat away at Roker Park in October 1987, that was followed by the infamous ‘mud slide’ game at Springfield Park in March ‘88 which ended 2:2.

We played Sunderland three times last campaign, losing the lot, the first league game of the season, away at the Stadium of Light, 2:1, an EFL Cup tie at the DW Stadium, Nathan Broadhead scoring against us in that game as Sunderland won 0:2, then the heaviest of the lot, we got done in the league at the DW  0:3, the least said about that game the better.

Classic Encounter

In our administration season we did the double over the Mackems, despite everything that brought with it.

Winning up at the Stadium of Light was some achievement, with a team full of kids we pulled it off, Kyle Joseph with our only attempt in the game, scoring the goal that sealed our 0:1 away win in December. It was a real backs to the wall game and one that summed up the spirit of the club, a proud day to be a Latics supporter.

Highlights Sunderland 0:1 Latics

Sunderland Current Form

Sunderland currently sit 13th in the Championship with 17pts from 13 games, their recent form is, WDDDL.

Sunderland’s 6 home games so far this season in the league have brought 7 points from 1 win and 4 draws, just the 1 defeat, Sunderland have scored 6 goals on home turf and conceded just 4.

Their last six Championship games have brought just the one win – Reading away 0:3 – two defeats – away at Middlesbrough and Swansea - and four draws, these six games have been played under new boss Tony Mowbray following Alex Neil moving to Stoke City at the end of August.

Player To Watch – Alex Pritchard

Alex Pritchard

29 year old midfielder, Alex Pritchard is the man that most things at Sunderland go through. Yet to score this season, but already got two assists under his belt.

Premier League experience with Spurs (1), West Brom (2) and Huddersfield (44) and over 150 games at Championship level, Pritchard is a player of quality, hardly a blood and thunder player, he has picked up just 20 yellows and 1 red card in 258 games over the eleven seasons that he has been active.
