Latics have met Middlesbrough on 19 occasions previously. With just 2 wins it’s fair to say we don’t have the best of records against the Boro.
Our first meeting came in Division 3, in the 1986/87 season, a 0:2 defeat at Springfield Park on 30th August 1986, young versions of Gary Pallister and Tony Mowbray in the Boro team that day, with Mowbray scoring the visitors second goal. The return fixture came on the 6th May 1987 at Ayresome Park, a goalless draw, Boro going up in 2nd place whilst the Latics had to settle for the playoffs after finishing 4th.
We have only beaten Middlesbrough twice, both times in the Premier League, one away and one home victory.
The away win came on the 21st January 2006, Jason Roberts and David Thompson giving the Latics a first half lead, only for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Yakubu to draw Boro level, Neil Mellor winning the game for us in the 90th minute on his Wigan Athletic debut.
The home win was a less dramatic affair, 15 August 2007, a 55th minute Antoine Sibierski goal the only highlight of the game which ended 1:0 in our favour.
Of the 11 games between the two clubs that have followed that Sibierski winner we have drawn 6, lost 5 and won a big fat zero!
Classic Encounter
Following our relegation from the Premier League we struggled early in the 2013/14 season to come to terms with the Championship, just two wins in the opening five fixtures, we came up against Middlesbrough on the 25th August, although we didn’t win the game it was an exciting encounter.
Grant Holt putting the Latics in front with a 17th minute penalty following a foul on Marc Antoine Fortune.
Boro responded, George Friend equalising on the stroke of half time and then on 75 minutes, Grant Leadbitter gave the visitors the lead. An 85th minute Jordi Gomez free kick gave us a share of the spoils.

Middlesbrough’s 6 away games so far this season in the league have brought just the 1 point, 1 draw (Stoke 2:2) and 5 defeats, Boro have scored 5 goals on their travels and conceded 11.
Their last six Championship games have brought just the one win – Birmingham at home 1:0 – four defeats and one draw.

22 year old left wing back, Ryan Giles is the man that sets up the chances at Middlesbrough.
Giles joined the Boro on loan from Premier League club Wolves this summer, he has previous Championship experience with Coventry, Rotherham, Cardiff and Blackburn, clocking up 88 appearances.
So far this season Giles leads the assist chart at Boro with 3, but hasn’t scored himself yet.
