Latics are on the Wembley trail on Tuesday evening when the Papa John Trophy bandwagon rolls into town, Arsenal Under 21s are our opponents as we attempt to reach the semi-finals and Blackburn referee, Ben Toner, will be in charge of the game.

Following three seasons at National League level, Toner was promoted to the National List of Ref’s in the summer of 2015 and began refereeing Football League games that coming season, his debut was the AFC Wimbledon v Plymouth League Two game on the 8th August 2015, a two-nil away win for Argyle and just the one yellow card.
Ben Toner has refereed the Latics on three occasions previously, with Curtis Tilt being the only Wigan Athletic player to pick up a card from those three games, away at Accy last season. Toner hasn’t refereed an Arsenal game at any level previously.
Ben Toner’s last game was the League One fixture on Saturday 22nd January, between Morecambe and Wycombe Wanderers, which of course finished 3:2 to Morecambe, four yellow cards produced, two for each side.
