We’re off to the Seaside on Tuesday, Blackpool away is usually a massive fixture for the Latics supporters, a large following is the order of the day, unfortunately not this year though.
So a look back on one or two previous encounters at Bloomfield Road is what we’ll do.
Down the years the two clubs have met 47 times with the Latics recording 21 wins to Blackpool’s 16. The first meeting was an FA cup 1st round tie on the 21 November 1979 at Bloomfield Road. A Colin Methven goal, scored with his knee, gave the Latics a creditable 1-1 draw and a replay at Springfield Park three days later.
A crowd of 14,589 witnessed Frank Corrigan and Tommy Gore finding the back of the ne to give the Latics a 2:0 win and set us on course for a cup run that would include an away win at Stamford Bridge, before gallantly going down in the 4th round away at Everton in front of 51,863 fans, a record attendance at the time for a Latics game.
Two games that stand out both ended up 1-3 in Latics favour, one in the Premier League, the other in the Championship.
16 April 2011, a brilliant atmosphere and a superb display saw the Latics coast to victory with goals from Rodallega (3), N’Zogbia (45) and, despite what the dubious goals committee might say, Diame (67), Blackpool’s consolation came in the 83rd minute with the game well and truly in our back pocket.
On the last day of February in 2015 both clubs were struggling down at the foot of the Championship, Latics with just one win in their previous eleven games and just the obligatory away win at Elland Road added to that in the previous twenty, looked like they might come unstuck, but goals from Kim Bo-kyung, Harry Maguire and James McClean gave the traveling support another reason to enjoy their trip to the seaside. Both clubs did suffer relegation at the end of that season.
