Any Previous? PNE v Latics

Latics and Preston have met 50 times down the years, North End having slightly the better of things at the moment with 20 wins to our 15.

The first meeting came in 1980, 26th August in the League Cup 2nd round 1st leg at Deepdale, just over 8,000 spectators saw us go down by a single goal, the return leg a week later at Springfield Park attracted a crowd of 9,692, despite a Jeff Wright goal, Preston won the game 1-2 and progressed to the 3rd round 3-1 on aggregate.

We have had some tough clashes at Deepdale, a ground where we haven’t won since Jason Roberts scored after just 45 seconds into his debut in January 2004, we finished that match 2:4 winners.

Classic Encounters

At the start of the 1999/2000 season Latics moved into their brand new ground and off the pitch there was an air of excitement, the season started off really well, 2 wins and a draw in the opening 3 league games and a winning start in the League Cup.

Saturday 28th August 1999, a buoyant Latics travelled 15 miles up the M6 and put in a great display to bring back all the points in a 4 goal demolition of Preston, Stuart Barlow bagging a hat-trick and Simon Haworth with the other goal.

Latics - Carroll; Green, McGibbon, Balmer, Bowen (Lee 45); Sheridan, O’Neill, Kilford; Barlow, Haworth, Liddell

Meet The Ref - Preston North End v Latics

Latics take the short trip up the M6 on Saturday to face neighbours Preston North End in a Championship fixture at Deepdale, the referee for the game will be Sheffield based official, Tom Bramall.

Tom Bramall

The 32 year old was promoted to the EFL at the start of the 2018/19 season, unfortunately, during the preseason build up for the 2019/20 campaign he suffered a serious ACL injury which kept him sidelined until February 2020.

Having been promoted to the Select Group 2 only last season, Bramall must have impressed as he has now been elevated to Select Group 1 referees and is a fully fledged Premier League ref.

So far in his career, Tom Bramall has taken charge of 147 games, issued 466 yellow and 19 red cards, pointing to the penalty spot on 26 occasions.

Previous Games

Tom Bramall has refereed the Latics 4 times, the last time was our 1:3 away win at Wycombe last season on our way to winning the League One title.

Bramall last refereed Preston in their 2:1 defeat away at Wolves in the EFL Cup back in August at the start of the current campaign.

Tom Bramall has refereed 23 games so far this season, 5 of which have been in the Premier League and 11 in the Championship.

Any Previous? Latics v Norwich City

We have met Norwich on 16 occasions previously with just 3 wins and 7 defeats it’s fair to say we haven’t got the best of records in this particular fixture.

Always a close affair, in the 16 games, 6 have ended all square and 9 of the other 10 have been settled by the odd goal.
